Driver's License

New residents of Tennessee must change their out-of-state licenses to a valid Tennessee license within 30 days of establishing permanent residency. A vision test only is required, if you have a valid license from another state. To get a first-time license, you will need a certified birth certificate and Social Security card (or their equivalents); and you must pass a written law test, a vision test, and a road test. Tags and Registration

New residents to Nashville are required to change their out-of-state vehicle registration at the time their residency has been declared.

• Vehicles must pass the Nashville Vehicle Inspection Test before a license tag can be obtained. You can get inspection information by calling 615-399-8995.
• You must show proof of registration or title or the name and address of the lienholder to the County Clerk's offices or one of its branches to register the vehicle. For more information, call 615-862-6050.
