Start interviewing movers and
decide on a moving day.
Start making lists of anything
you can think of that needs to be done before, during, or
just after your move.
Start using things that you
can't take with you (cleaning supplies, frozen foods,
propane for your grill).
Start a list of people,
magazines, and organizations that will need your new
address.
Obtain a relocation package
from Linda , if you haven't already done so.
Six weeks prior to your move:
Make an inventory of your
possessions.
Plan a garage sale and/or plan
what you may want to donate to a charity. Donations may
be tax-deductible.
If you will be storing some of
your items, make necessary arrangements.
Obtain current records from
doctors, dentists, schools, lawyers, etc. and ask for
referrals for professionals in your new destination.
Also, get prescriptions transferred.
Contact a tax advisor or the
IRS to see what moving expenses may be tax-deductible.
Find out any regulations on
carrying pets and plants to new state.
Start packing a box or two a
day (if you will be doing your own packing). Be sure to
pack only things you won't need for a while.
One month prior to your move:
Get a change-of-address kit
from the post office and start filling out the cards.
Make arrangements for your
pet's travel to your new destination.
Contact utility and other
companies to cancel service in your current location and
begin service in your new location. Remember to keep your
utilities active through your move day and have your new
utilities connected before you arrive at your new home.
Also get refunds on any deposits you made.
Contact insurance company to
obtain coverage in your new destination (homeowner's,
auto, renter's, etc.)
Three weeks prior to your move:
Make travel and lodging
arrangements for your moving trip. If you will be taking
a pet, be sure to make reservations at hotels that allow
pets.
Start making a
"Necessities" box.
Start making a "Kid's
Kit."
Arrange to close and open bank
accounts accordingly.
Two weeks prior to your move:
Have your car serviced for the
trip.
Contact moving company to
verify details for your move.
Return any library books or
movies you may have checked out (and any items borrowed
from friends or neighbors).
Pick up contents of your safety
deposit box.
Take pet to the veterinarian
for any immunizations. Get pet's records from
veterinarian.
Make any special arrangements
for childcare or pet care for the moving day.
One week prior to your move:
Give away plants and food that
will not be moved.
Prepare directions to new home
for your driver. Be very specific and include numbers
where you or another contact can be reached.
A few days prior to your move:
Defrost your refrigerator and
freezer. Make sure the doors are held securely open, so
they cannot accidentally trap children or pets inside.
Place charcoal inside to dispel odors.
Finish your
"Necessities" box and your "Kid's
Kit."
Set aside a specific area for
things that will not be going on the moving truck.
Contact moving company to
verify arrival time and ask any last questions.
Have appliances serviced for
moving.
Moving Day:
Make sure that someone is
available all day to answer the movers' questions.
Make a note of all utility
meter readings to verify accuracy later.
Understand your movers' codes,
and read your bill of lading and inventory list
thoroughly before you sign anything.
Have travelers' checks for
quick, available funds.
Leave all old keys that new
occupant will need. Give to Realtor or new occupant.
Give your itinerary to
friends/relatives and use them as message headquarters.
At your new address:
Verify that utilities and all
other services ordered have been turned on.
Ask Postman for any mail he may
have been holding for your arrival.
Get new driver's license.
Register car within thirty
days.
